Monitoring: Proving carbon reductions and informing the path to a low carbon future
UCL Cruciform Building, Lecture Theatre 1, 90 Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT

This event is the second educational event from the Good Homes Alliance for 2008. It will focus on practical lessons from the field and draw on the expertise of the Usable Building Trust and Oxford Brookes, together with monitoring experience from GHA developer members, as well as EP and EST. There is general consensus that there is a gap between design aspiration and delivered reality for new homes in the UK. There is obvious benefit for developers and homeowners alike to be able to prove how buildings are operating, as part of a Quality Assurance process and to inform future designs. Results from 6 years of monitoring at Stamford Brook have demonstrated once again the benefits of post construction monitoring. The results assisted the developers in understanding significant thermal by-passing mechanisms, as final thermal performance was on average 20% lower than designed. All of these points reinforce the importance of monitoring for the successful delivery of low carbon homes. GHA developer members all commit to 2 years post construction monitoring and the GHA will shortly launch its own monitoring protocol. We will also ask a number of companies involved in monitoring to display their products at the event. There will be plenty of opportunities to understand their offerings and meet the companies involved.
