Refurbishment of our existing housing stock is a growing priority given the urgent need to reduce energy use and improve comfort levels and health in millions of homes. While the government’s Green Deal is expected to provide financial support for some level of refurbishment, there are limits and may be some risks associated with this approach

Refurbishment to Passivhaus standards can deliver 80-90% reductions in the energy used for heating, as well as transforming homes to be healthy and comfortable. However the costs of refurbishment to this level are significant.

This event will therefore explore the options available for the refurbishment of existing homes both in the UK and elsewhere in the EU. Speakers will explore the issue of delivering low energy housing in reality - which is central to the approaches of both the GHA and Passivhaus – both through theory and practical examples. Further presentations will then examine the financial and broader social context within which the refurbishment challenge is set, in order to understand the likely implications of moving to exemplary standards of low-energy refurbishment across the UK.

This will be followed by the GHA annual debate and Christmas Drinks.
