Site Visits September 2008- Bookings now open!
Posted: 16 Jul 2008 1:53 pm

This year the Good Homes Alliance has 3 site visits to offer in September: on the 16th (Swan Country Homes, Cornwall), 18th (Ecos Homes, Somerset) and 30th (Crest Nicholson BioRegional Quinmtain and Chalk Hill Contemporary, Sussex).

All are great opportunities to see sustainable construction in action, as all of the sites will be incomplete, and all are very different: 4 of our Developer Members are showing us their latest projects, and will be discussing first hand the technical details of materials, targets and specifications, problems and sucesses encountered on site, as well as lessons learned.

Please see the events page for more information.

Each visit is £50 (plus VAT) each - Free to GHA Members

LowCarb4Real Workshop
Posted: 01 Jul 2008 11:55 am

This is one of 6 LowCarb4Real workshops taking place in
June, July and September.
The workshops will enable us to share knowledge and understanding with academics and others in
the industry as, together, we seek to explore the issues.
At the workshops you will:
• Hear the research evidence from Stamford Brook and other field
trials.
• Hear about the experience of the Good Homes Alliance, who
are seeking to achieve and monitor code levels 3 and 4 housing
now.
• Explore your views and discuss the implications for:
• The way new housing is designed
• The way new housing is constructed
• The whole new housing production process.

Good Homes- not just about carbon reduction
Posted: 30 Jun 2008 11:13 am

Our Good Homes for the Good Life event on June 12th was well attended and very informative and interesting covering the health, neighbourhood and well-being aspects of Good Homes. We've had great feedback so far (not least about the cakes!). Some of the presentations are online now in the library- please feel free to take a look. The others will be added as soon as possible.
Details of our September site visits will be posted very soon!
Watch this space, or sign up to our newsletter if you haven't already: Email info@goodhomes.org.uk to be kept updated.

Good Homes for the Good Life: June 12th
Posted: 02 Jun 2008 12:29 pm

Our next event "Good Homes for the Good Life" will be held at the Prince's Foundation, Charlotte Road, London.
This event is all about going beyond bricks and mortar and thinking about the wider picture of housing: are housbuilders and developers thinking enough about health and happiness? About walkable neighbourhoods, allergies, social cohesion, green lifestyles and well-being? what kind of people and society evolve from poorly designed homes?
Please see the events page for more information.
Some places are still available, but space is limited so do email info@goodhomes.org.uk
to ensure you don't miss out.

This event is sponsored by English Partnerships and RedTree.

GHA and LowCarb4Real
Posted: 02 Jun 2008 12:24 pm

There is strong research evidence to show that there is a large gap between theory and practice when it comes to carbon emissions from new housing. If the Government targets for very low and zero carbon housing are to be realised it is vital that the performance gap is closed. The LowCarb4Real project seeks to work with industry to explore the implications of the research evidence from the Stamford Brook sustainable housing field trial, learn from the experiences of early attempts to build low carbon housing and to find ways of tackling the problems and improving performance.
See attached workshop invitation and do email simon@goodhomes.org.uk for more information

Please take a moment for our on-line survey
Posted: 12 May 2008 1:09 pm

We are conducting this survey to identify the industry’s views on sustainable construction technology and the support that the industry may need to achieve low carbon energy efficient homes.
It should liiterally take a minute, and your views are really important in allowing us to feed back to the government as well as informing our own prgramme of events and research.
Please click here for the survey
Many thanks- watch this space for the results...

Following up from our "Seminal" Monitoring Event...
Posted: 06 May 2008 4:20 pm

Our recent event, in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, was really well attended and the feedback was great- it was even described as seminal by Fionn Stephenson of Oxford Brookes University, and we are planning to follow up with a GHA think paper on this topic. At the event, participants were given the first viewing of detailed monitoring data from a leading development at Bladon in Oxfordshire and several monitoring companies displayed their new and developing products.

Interestingly, the experts present stressed the importance of questionnaires and resident feedback as essential tools for meaningful monitoring. The GHA will explore this further in our forthcoming think paper, which is due to be published next month.

The presentations are now available in the library.

GHA's Position Paper on the Code for Sustainable Homes
Posted: 09 Jan 2008 5:42 pm

The GHA has developed a draft position paper on the Code for Sustainable Homes, as our Members' experience of implementing the energy requirements at Levels 3 & 4 suggest that there are some significant inconsistencies in the Code.

A copy of the draft paper is available to members in the members section of this website - in the policy section of the library.
Please log on to download your copy and let us know what you think.

Full details of the GHA position will be made available more widely once full consultation and feedback has been received from the members.

GHA Seminar and 1 year birthday @ EcoBuild 2008 - 27th Feb
Posted: 20 Dec 2007 5:27 pm

Our afternoon GHA Seminar
"Low carbon homes: A Reality Check"
will cover questions such as:
Is the focus of government policy on zero carbon homes neglecting broader sustainability issues? Is the industry even capable and sufficiently supported to deliver low carbon homes in reality? How do CO2 emissions from low carbon homes compare to emissions from lifestyle impacts, such as food consumption habits and transport? Would the investment required for zero carbon homes offer greater CO2 savings if applied elsewhere, such as to existing stock?

More details coming soon...
Join us to see what we've acheived in our first year and what we have planned for 2008.
